Black Vulmea's Vengeance:
Harold DeLay's preliminary double-page spread.
"Black Vulmea's Vengeance" first appeared in GOLDEN FLEECE Volume 1 Number 2 published in November 1938. The story was illustrated by Harold DeLay. DeLay had previously illustrated three REH stories in WEIRD TALES. These were "Black Caanan" (WEIRD TALES, June 1936), "Red Nails" (WEIRD TALES, July, August-September, and October 1936), and "Black Hound of Death" (WEIRD TALES, November 1936). He would go on to illustrate "Gates of Empire" in GOLDEN FLEECE Volume 2 Number 1 (January 1939).
Pulp and art collector Doug Ellis recently purchased a preliminary of the opening double-page spread for Robert E. Howard's "Black Vulmea's Vengeance." With Doug's kind permission I am posting the preliminary illustration along with the finished piece that was published in GOLDEN FLEECE. Both scans are courtesy of Doug Ellis and will be be added to the Howard Works listing for GOLDEN FLEECE Volume 1 Number 2. This is a rare opportunity to see something that is not often seen. Enjoy!
