Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention Auction
Glenn Lord estate auction

From Doug Ellis:

Besides pulps, the Glenn Lord estate auction being held on Friday night, April 6, 2018, at the upcoming Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 6-8, 2018, at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center) contains a number of rare fanzines.

Among them are several issues of The Phantagraph from the mid-1930's, which for much of its run was edited by Don Wollheim. The three issues, and one supplement, that I'll post here are among them. Many pros contributed to these, most notably H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. The issues in the auction contain two installments of Howard's "The Hyborian Age."

Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention Auction
Glenn Lord estate auction

From Doug Ellis:

Among the rare pulps in the Glenn Lord estate auction being held on Friday night, April 6, 2018, at the upcoming Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 6-8, 2018, at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center) are these four.

Nickel Detective (which was a title change from Popular Fiction Magazine, which in turn was a title change from Man Stories), ran for six issues from January to August 1933, before changing title to Strange Detective Stories. Under that latter title, it lasted four issues, from November 1933 to February 1934. The auction will include the August 1933 issue of Nickel Detective, as well as the November 1933, December 1933 and February 1934 issues of Strange Detective Stories. The last two of those feature stories by Conan author Robert E. Howard.

Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention Auction
Glenn Lord estate auction

From Doug Ellis:

Among the pulps in the Glenn Lord estate auction being held on Friday night, April 6, 2018, at the upcoming Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 6-8, 2018, at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center), are nearly 100 issues of Weird Tales. Most issues feature the works of Robert E. Howard (for whom Lord was the literary executor for nearly three decades), including the December 1932 issue, featuring the first Conan story.

Also among these issues are two copies of the November 1935 issue, featuring the Conan story, "Shadows in Zamboula," both of which are shown here. The image on the left is the U.S. edition, while the image on the right -- which is heavily censored by a text block! -- is the Canadian edition.

Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention Auction
REH material from the estate of Glenn Lord will be included.

With the advent of 2018, the upcoming Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention is now just three months away (April 6-8, 2018, at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center). As those who’ve attended past conventions know, we’ve had some dynamite Friday night auctions, and this year’s Friday night auction (held the evening of April 6) will be no exception.

We’re honored to announce that this year’s Friday night auction will draw on material from the estate of Glenn Lord. As literary executor of the Robert E. Howard estate for nearly three decades, Lord was instrumental in popularizing the works of Howard, and in making reams of previously unpublished Howard material available. It would be difficult to overstate his contributions to Howard’s legacy. Not surprisingly, his own pulp collection was centered around Howard, but also contained many other titles as well. If you’re a fan of pulps – and particularly if you’re a fan of the man who brought us Conan and so many other memorable characters – you won’t want to miss it!

We’ll be posting more details over the coming weeks concerning the pulps, fanzines and other rare material that will be in the auction. For now, we’ll just post the one piece of original art that will be in the auction – Frank Utpatel’s original cover art for the second Robert E. Howard Arkham House collection, “The Dark Man and Others”. The art was a little too large for my scanner, so these images are very slightly cropped, but we’ll post full sized shots later. We’re showing it in two images. The image on the left is Utpatel’s original art, on illustration paper. The image on the right is scanned with the overlay (which contains some image and text) on top of the art.
